Gavin is very dramatic. He gets very expressive with his body language at times. When he's feeling upset but doesn't quite know how to say it, he hunches his shoulders, looks down at the ground intently and sighs deeply until somebody asks him what's wrong. He looks like a little old man when he does this. When we are having a conversation and he's sick of my questions, he'll start doing this strange thing with his eyes. To him, it must feel like he's rolling his eyes in the back of his head or something but it looks like he's looking from side to side. Another form of his dramatic expression was when I picked him up from preschool early last week and he literally threw himself onto the ground screaming that he didn't want to go home. Gotta love that.

At bedtime, Gavin typically falls asleep long after Tyler does. Tyler doesn't nap so he's pretty exhausted, but Gavin has always had a tough time turning his little brain off. Even when he was a baby, he'd go from wide awake to sound asleep. Still does. Wide awake, tossing, singing, whispering, clapping, whatever; one last deep sigh and finally asleep. In the past I've always sat in their bedroom until they fell asleep, but lately I've been sneaking out of the room leaving Gavin to do whatever he needs to do to fall asleep on his own. The other night, he was having a particularly difficult time. I snuck away and he came out ten minutes later telling me "Mommy, you were lost. Why were you lost?" Silly boy. Last night as he was falling asleep, he told me "Don't get lost mommy." Ok I won't my friend.

We cooked BBQ between rainstorms tonight. Since we've been cooped up indoors the past few days, it was nice to be out getting fresh, albeit cold, air. Tyler had been dressing up in Daddy's work clothes and wore a pair of his dress shoes outside while we checked on the burgers. Gavin had been inside sidetracked by the TV. But, when he discovered the rest of his family was outside, Gavin tried walking out in his bare feet. There were puddles all over the ground and it was cold so I told him to go back inside and was surprised at his compliance as he retreated inside with no fuss. However, just as we pulled the burgers off the grill and headed back indoors, Gavin came running outside wearing another pair of Daddy's dress shoes. He was absolutely heartbroken that he couldn't go outside in the work shoes. That pair of shoes was really old and had to be burried in the closet. Now I know where he retreated and disappeared to the entire BBQ.
